Abstract: The characteristics of geothermal field versus hydrocarbon occurrences in Junggar Basin studied in this paper are based on 760 heatflow measurements combined with basin tectonic evolution analysis. It is considered that the Jung- gar Basin is a relatively cold basin with les intense geothermal field. The source rocks are older and the depth of gene- rating hydrocarbon threshold is deeper, which results in certain difficulty for petroleum exploration.

Key words: Junggar Basin, geothermal gradient, geothermal field, geothermal heat flow value, vitrinite reflectance
