Abstract: This paper presents opinions to completely classify and correlate the Permian and Mesozoic strata in Junggar Basin on the basis of regional geological data integrated with the tectonic and depositional developments, petrophysical propertics, palaeontologic characteristics and seismic sequence classification and correlation. It concluded that Frgcheng fotmation should be clasified into late Permian in periodl, being correlated with Pingdiquan formation in eastern Basing; Lower Wuerhe for mation be correlated with Wutonggau formation. The former Baikouquan formation being sediments of early in Middle Permian, should be classified into Karamay formation, while Upper Permian should be correlated with Upper Cangfanggou group in southern margin and east part of Junggar Basin, which is modified to be Lower Triassic. In addition, some new views have been provided for correlation of Jurassic and Upper Cretaceous in the northwestern tnargin.
