Abstract: Based on maturation history of source rock, this paper analysed the significance of Carboniferous source rock with respect to formation of reservoir in the northwest margin, east part, hinterland, south margin and north part of Junggar basin. Although Carboniferous source rock has generated and expelled large amount of hydrocarbon, oil and gas exploration comes into a very unfavorable situation because Carboniferous source sag failed to be determined, and reservoir formed in early period was destroyed for a long time. Therefore, it is necessary to deeper strengthen the research of distribution of Carboniferous source rock and reservoir history when searching for oil/gas reservoir mainly sourced from Carboniferous.
