Abstract: In the working conference on petroleum exploration held by Xinjiang Petroleum Administration Bureau in Feb. 1996, the leaders concerned and some geologists demonstrated their own points of view on petroleum exploration in Junggar basin. It is unanimously accepted that to make great breakthrogh in exploration, going beyound the old conception and rules is of primary importance; seismic survey should go ahead, and more attentions should be paid to 3D seismic exploration. In addition to differentiating the structure with the seismic survey, we should undergo seismic stratigraphy research to predict the lithology and reservoir petrophysic properties. As the exploration is developing in depth, more efforts should be made in the exploration for non-anticlinal reservoir, and the northern margin and north slope of the southern margin are the profitable areas for searching for such reservoir. Jurassic in Junggar basin with rich petroleum resources is characterized by superior reservoir quality and shallow burial with hydrocarbon-forming potential, which is well developed in the hinterland of the basin, east slope of Changji sag, slope of the northwestern margin and piedmont faulted-fold belt in the southern margin. It is of great significance to strengthen gas exploration. We should throw in more energy to study the generation, resource evaluation and exploration teachniques for natural gas in Junggar basin and overcome the difficulties in drilling, completion and test.
