Abstract: It is concluded that Junggar area is a continental ctust rather than an oceanic crust during Early Paleozoic. based on the following evidences: geochemical components of the most widely-distributed Upper Paleozoic volcaniclastic in Junggar basin formed in the volcanic island arc area of continental margin: the Ordovician in the northern Junggar area is Composed of continental shelf platform carbonate. and similar limestone decollement was discovered in the Silurian. indicating that the basement of ocean basin is a stable continental block ; composite rocks (1 900ma) were found in the eastern Junggar area; the basin is at the stage of continental basin evolution during the Late aleozoic to middle Cenozoic.
