Abstract: Rich results in hydrocarbon exploration have been obtained in Tarim basin, while the difficulties in petroleum geology theory guiding exploration practice are encountered at present.Successful oil/gas exploration theories in eastern China failed in Tarim basin.During development of new theory, oil and gas remigration theory demonstrated by the author in recent years played a central role in reservoir formation(including oil/ gas generation, migration and accumulation). It reflected the characteristics of polycyclic tectonic evolution in China, accorded with enrichment of fluid mineral product such as oil and gas. Therefore it is a key to solving hydrocarbon exploration difficulty in Tarim basin at present.

Key words: Tarim basin, Oil and gas exploration, Oil and gas migration, Secondary migration, Polycyclic tectonic movement, Tectonic evolution
